FAT PLANTS

Karin Fauchard
Lazar Lyutakov
Michael Weidhofer

Succulents are plants that have adapted to their natural environment. They are able to store water and thereby survive large periods of inconsistent downpour.

A similar type of resistance can be credited to the Pistolet gallery, managing to stay active despite of a difficult politico-cultural climate.
Such as the adaptation of succulents to their environment, the artwork reflects the exhibition’s distinct context, relying on various strategies. This very condition has an inherent effect on the work itself.

Karine Fauchard’s series of drawings explores a flower loaded with symbolic value, and an important Bulgarian export good. Through the formal juxtaposition of various types of roses named after famous personalities she achieves an ambivalent mesh of associations.
One of Lazar Lyutakov’s pieces mirrors a method of city-beautification commonly found in Bulgaria. Improvised plant pots made from worn-down car tires are often created by the population to help fashion their immediate surroundings inexpensively.
A further work, Michael Weidhofer imports an empty wooden crate to Bulgaria as hand luggage on the flight from Austria. This box, which can only be opened by means of destruction, measures the maximum volume permitted as on-board luggage.

FAT PLANTS marks the third collaboration of Vienna-based artists Karin Fauchard, Lazar Lyutakov and Michael Weidhofer.
